Arc Welding
Reliable welding for extreme conditions
Bringing together a wide range of processes TIG, MIG/MAG, and Plasma
Precision arc welding for reliable assemblies across CERN’s accelerators
At CERN, arc welding is used join materials from stainless steel and aluminium to copper and special alloys. In the main workshop, our qualified welders deliver reliable, high-quality assemblies across scales from small precision parts to metre-sized structures.
On site interventions
Beyond the workshop, interventions in experimental areas and tunnels call for the same level of skill under challenging conditions, where versatility, safety, and access are key. This combination of experience, innovation, and attention to demanding requirements such as ultra-high vacuum or cryogenics makes our on-site activities unique.

Precision Welding for Cryogenic Giants
The WA104 cryostat demanded over a kilometre of defect-free welds. Using both MIG and TIG techniques, CERN welders joined thick aluminium panels with millimetre-scale accuracy, ensuring leak-tightness and stability for liquid-argon operation.
Reliable Connections with Orbital Welding
Orbital TIG welding provides reproducible, high-quality joints for accelerator magnet interconnections, ensuring leak-tightness and mechanical integrity under cryogenic and ultra-high-vacuum conditions.
